Joy Allcock

M.Ed.: Literacy Reseacher, Author, Educator

Joy Allcock is a Co-Founder and a Director at Code-Ed. She is a globally recognised literacy education leader known for her groundbreaking research and innovative approaches to teaching reading and spelling. With a Master of Education with first-class honours from Massey University and a background in occupational therapy, Joy brings a unique perspective to literacy instruction that combines academic rigour with practical, hands-on solutions.

In 2024, Joy received the prestigious Brian Street Award from the International Literacy Research Association, an accolade celebrating her outstanding contributions to advancing literacy research and practice. Her evidence-based, speech-to-sound-to-print methodology has been endorsed by some of the world's most respected educators, including Dean Pedro Noguera of the University of Southern California, who praised her work for transforming literacy outcomes and promoting educational equity.

Professor James Chapman of Massey University, New Zealand's Chief Literacy Advisor, and Professor John Hattie, internationally renowned for his research on visible learning, have both hailed Joy's work as a cornerstone of effective literacy instruction. Hattie has referred to Joy as the "Queen of teaching the skills for reading and spelling," a testament to her ability to empower both teachers and students with tools that ensure success in the classroom.

Joy's contributions to literacy include authoring several influential texts, such as Key Foundations, The Code Is the Key, Elevate & Evaluate, Catch Up Your Code and Sort Out Your Syllables. Her work has been adopted in many countries, driving significant results in bridging literacy gaps and reducing the "Matthew Effect" in education. By ensuring that no teacher or student is left behind, her evidence-proven approach creates equitable and inclusive learning environments.

Joy's leadership extends to her role in the Shine Research Study, conducted in collaboration with Massey University's Professor Chapman, and the results were evaluated further by Prof John Hattie for their impressive effect size shifts. This pioneering study has demonstrated remarkable improvements in literacy outcomes, particularly among Māori and Pasifika students in New Zealand, and has gained international recognition.

As an inspiring keynote speaker and educator, Joy continues to shape the future of literacy education through her passion for equitable learning and unwavering commitment to empowering educators and students worldwide.

Jill Eggleton

Educator, Literacy Consultant, Author

Jill Eggleton is a globally recognised leader in literacy education and the recipient of the Queen's Service Order (QSO) for international service to Education and Literacy. As Co-Founder and Director at Code-Ed and a Director at Global Ed, she continues to drive innovation in literacy resources and education.

Throughout her career, Jill has created many widely used reading and writing resources by educators globally, including in South Africa, the UK, North America, and throughout Asia. Her dedication to creating materials, engaging students, and supporting teachers has made her a trusted name in classrooms worldwide.

Jill's journey in education began as a classroom teacher and administrator, experiences that shaped her understanding of equity and the unique needs of every child. Working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds gave her a deep appreciation for respecting and affirming all identities. She believes true equity in education is not one-size-fits-all and that every child deserves opportunities tailored to their strengths and needs.

Social and emotional learning is also central to Jill's philosophy. She understands that academic success is deeply tied to the emotional climate of the classroom and strives to create resources that captivate students' minds while touching their hearts. Her resources empower teachers, help students feel safe, take learning risks, collaborate with others, and affirm their cultural identities.

In recent years, Jill has collaborated with Joy Allcock to develop resources for Code-Ed, including Key Foundations, The Code Is the Key, Sound Rhymes and Sound Poems, and more. They are equipping educators with practical, evidence-based tools to transform literacy instruction. Jill is working with Joy on texts for the Year 3 Code Is the Key series, which will launch in August 2025.

Throughout her career, Jill has worked tirelessly to support teachers, understanding firsthand their challenges. She is passionate about creating resources that are easy to use and that maximize every teachable moment, empowering educators to make a lasting impact.

Her work, recognised by her Queen's Honour, inspires educators and improves literacy outcomes for students worldwide.

With over 30 years of experience as an educator, my journey has been one of continuous learning and growth. I've had the privilege of teaching in diverse schools across New Zealand and the UK, engaging with students from various cultural backgrounds and languages.

My passion for learning ignited at a young age, leading me to teach neighbourhood children on weekends at the age of 5. Today, as the founder of a Tutoring School, I take pride in accelerating learning and igniting the literacy flame in students. My focus extends beyond the classroom, as I work closely with parents to empower them in supporting their child's educational journey.

An encounter with a remarkable colleague, Jill Eggleton, sparked my teaching journey early in my career. Learning alongside experienced educators has been inspiring; together, we've fostered imagination and inquiry skills in students. I've cherished the opportunity to lead my own team, unlocking the magic of literacy for countless students.

Now, as a Code-Ed Resource Specialist, I am thrilled to collaborate with Joy Allcock and Jill Eggleton to further elevate literacy education in New Zealand. It's an honour to share their expertise and inspire educators and students alike.
